A broad coalition representing airlines, aircraft manufacturers, pilots, airports, and other aviation organizations is urging Congress to provide an additional $20 billion to modernize the nation’s air traffic control system.

 

In a July 15 letter to Congress, coalition members stated that “our nation’s aviation system is a key national asset, but it is under increasing strain.” The request for additional funds follows the $12.5 billion approved last year for FAA modernization efforts and reflects the aviation industry’s concern that additional investment will be needed to complete the work. The coalition says the funding is needed to replace outdated radar, computer, and communications equipment; improve the reliability of the national airspace system; expand controller training; and address persistent staffing shortages.

 

As a member of this coalition, ICAS supports its effort to secure the long-term investment needed to modernize the nation’s air traffic control infrastructure. A safe, reliable, and properly staffed system is essential to the entire aviation community, including the air show industry. Other coalition members include AOPA, Boeing, Airbus, EAA, GAMA, and dozens of aviation organizations representing nearly every segment of the industry.
