Start an Air Show: Introduction

From both an entertainment and organizational perspective, there is nothing quite like an air show.

Each year, millions of people attend hundreds of air shows all over the world to experience for themselves the unique spectacle of airplanes making use of all three dimensions of flight to entertain, inspire and educate. In a typical year, between 10 and 12 million spectators watch 5,000+ performances by 200+ performers (civilian and military) at 225-250 air shows in every corner of North America.

And they attend our events in an environment that has been extraordinarily safe for spectators. It has been more than 70 years since an air show spectator has been killed by a performing aircraft at a North American air show…a spectator safety record that is the envy of the motor sports industry.

To make this uncommon and spectacular form of family entertainment available to those millions of spectators, hundreds of different organizations – big and small, civilian and military – do the sometimes difficult, but always rewarding work necessary to plan and execute these events. As you start the process of creating a new air show or rejuvenating a dormant event, the International Council of Air Shows can provide you with information, contacts, insight and practical tools to help. Whether you have a big budget or a small one, a large group of workers or just a few volunteers, there are many resources available to you.

And we want to help make all of those resources available to you and your team.
