Art Scholl Memorial Showmanship Award
Each year, the International Council of Air Shows presents this award to the air show act or performer who best exemplifies the qualities of showmanship demonstrated by legendary aerobatic pilot and air show performer Art Scholl.
A New Way to Nominate
Beginning in 2026, nominations for the Art Scholl Memorial Showmanship Award must be submitted through our new online application process. We appreciate your patience as we transition to this new system and work to make the application process more streamlined and efficient.

The Legacy of Art Scholl
A longtime and active ICAS member, Scholl was renowned for his exceptional flying skills, professionalism, and ability to captivate an audience. Over the course of his career, he flew his signature Pennzoil Chipmunk before an estimated 80 million people and appeared in more than 200 motion pictures, documentaries, and television commercials. Scholl was killed on September 16, 1985, while filming a flying sequence off the coast of California.
His precise, exciting, and entertaining performances reflected the very best of the air show industry. A dedicated professional, Scholl practiced tirelessly to get the most from himself and his aircraft without compromising safety. His unique combination of exceptional piloting skills and showmanship consistently left audiences wanting more.
Scholl's commitment to excellence extended well beyond his performances. From his marketing support and personal appearances to the professionalism of his flying and his personal integrity, every aspect of his work demonstrated a commitment to the overall success of the air shows in which he participated. Throughout his career, he established a standard of professionalism and showmanship that continues to influence air show performers today.
