Air National Guard Temporarily Suspends Flyover Support

October 7th, 2024

The Air National Guard (ANG) recently announced that it is temporarily suspending all flyover support and other aerial demonstrations to conduct an evaluation of its aerial event protocols and procedures. This temporary hold may impact shows previously scheduled to receive aerial support from the ANG during the last several weeks of the 2024 air show season. In its statement, the ANG reminded shows that flyover support may still be available from non-ANG units, including active duty Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Navy, Marine Corps, Army, and Army National Guard units.

Following its initial announcement, the ANG subsequently clarified that the temporary hold will not impact shows scheduled to receive ANG support in the form of static display aircraft. Nor does the temporary hold impact any non-aerial support previously arranged with ANG units, including MAAS, AGE, airlift, or refueling operations. The hold does not impact support from active duty, Air Force Reserve, or Army National Guard units. And, finally, the temporary suspension of ANG aerial support will not impact ANG open houses/air shows scheduled through the end of the current air show season.

It is not yet clear how long the hold will be in place, but initial signs are that it is likely to last through the end of the current air show season. Although ICAS expects this restriction to be temporary, ANG aircraft scheduled for flyovers may require reauthorization by the office of the Secretary of the Air Force, Public Affairs when the temporary hold is lifted.

ICAS will use this space to report on new developments as we learn about them.
